juuna vsHotjar.

Hotjar is the household name for session replay and heatmaps, and it earned that: it is how a generation of teams first learned what watching a real session is worth. It is now part of Contentsquare, its tools folding into that larger platform.

juuna bundles that behaviour layer with the analytics Hotjar always left to another tool: replay and click, scroll and attention heatmaps beside traffic, funnels and Web Vitals, with the recordings kept on a dedicated instance that is only yours.

Their case

Choose Hotjar if…

  • You want feedback where your replays are: surveys, polls and interview tools are Hotjar territory, and juuna has no equivalent of them.
  • You already have an analytics tool you like and only want the behaviour layer beside it.
  • You want the stack your stakeholders already know, and the enterprise weight of Contentsquare behind it.
  • Years of refinement in the replay and heatmap experience itself matter to you.

Ours

Choose juuna if…

  • You want the analytics too. juuna is traffic, funnels and retention in the same tool as replay and heatmaps, so one script does the work of two.
  • You want recordings on your own hardware. juuna keeps replays on your dedicated instance, masked by default, never storing an IP address.
  • You want a flat bill instead of session tiers: $29 / $79 / $199 per month with every feature included.
  • You want performance in the picture: Core Web Vitals beside the sessions, so you can see the slow page and watch a visit that suffered it.

The real difference

Hotjar proved that watching ten sessions teaches you things a thousand pageviews cannot, and its survey and feedback tools still have no juuna equivalent. What it never tried to be is your analytics: the counting happens in another tool, and the recordings live in its cloud, now Contentsquare’s.

juuna’s bet is that the behaviour layer belongs inside the analytics rather than beside them: the funnel that shows the drop-off and the replay that explains it, one script, one dashboard, one dedicated instance where all of it stays. If you need surveys, Hotjar keeps that ground. If you want the seeing and the counting in one private place, that is juuna.

Asked and answered

Can juuna replace Hotjar and my analytics tool at once?
That is the intended shape: traffic, funnels and retention on one side, masked session replay and click, scroll and attention heatmaps on the other, from one script into one dashboard. What juuna does not replace is the feedback layer: it has no surveys, polls or interview tools.
Is Hotjar still a standalone product?
Hotjar joined Contentsquare, and since 2025 its tools have been folding into the Contentsquare platform. The capabilities continue there; what you sign up for and what it costs are now Contentsquare questions. This page compares against the replay-and-heatmaps job Hotjar has always been hired for.
What about Microsoft Clarity? It is free.
It is, and for basic replay and heatmaps it is genuinely good. It is also a Microsoft service running in Microsoft’s cloud, which is exactly the trade juuna exists to avoid. If free outweighs that, use Clarity with a clear conscience. juuna is for teams who want replay and analytics together on a server that is theirs alone.
Where do juuna’s recordings live?
On your own instance. Replays are captured with masking on by default, stored on your dedicated server, never store an IP address, and are pruned on a schedule, 30 days by default. Nobody outside your team watches them.
