Matomo is the veteran of self-hosted analytics: open source, feature-rich, and running on your own hardware if you want it to, with a cloud edition if you do not. For owning your analytics outright, it has been the serious answer since 2007.
juuna agrees about where the data belongs and disagrees about who should hold the pager. Every customer gets a dedicated instance that is provisioned, upgraded and backed up for them, with replay, heatmaps and Web Vitals in the base product. Here is the trade.

The real difference
Matomo answered the right question in 2007 and still answers it: analytics you can own outright. The price is a role. Self-hosting makes you the operator, responsible for upgrades, backups, scaling and patches for as long as the tool runs, and the behavioural features sit in the paid catalogue rather than the free core.
juuna is the same instinct with the operating removed. Your data still lives on a server that only you rent; somebody else carries the pager, and replay, heatmaps and vitals come standard. If you have the team and want the source, run Matomo and enjoy it. If you want the isolation without the job, that is juuna.
